Some music styles are notoriously difficult for the untrained to play, simply because they require a certain grounding and feeling - think reggae (simplistic as it may seem) in particular, or jazz - you can tell a layman a mile off because he has no swing. When disco emerged from the underground in the middle '70s, its biggest exponents were often opportunists, like Tina Charles, Disco Tex and Andrea True. Even established artists like the Bee Gees, Elton John, The Bay City Rollers, Paul McCartney and Dolly Parton, along with many others, cashed in some disco chips. With the commercial end of the genre afflicted with a certain amount of cheese, disco became a bit of a laughing stock and an almost satirical approach was adopted by outsiders who, essentaially, sent disco up. A plethora of odd, truly inspired or simply misguided recordings by rock and punk musicians filtered through to the alternative rock and more progressive dance scenes, with labels like Manchester's Factory and New York's Ze Records and 99 imprints being key players in getting some of this weirdness to the public en masse. This alternative, hybrid music is showcased on a number of recent compilations, such as 'Disco, Not Disco' vols. 1 & 2, '9 O'Clock Drop' and 'Anti-NY'. The music embodies the spirit of punk, James Brown-style regimentation (where applicable) and disco's bass-driven rhythms, four-to-the-floor and flying hi-hats. Experimental, accidental, earnest and simply for the hell of it - it's all here...
