Advances in space travel, arcade games like Pacman, the first home games consoles and early computers which allowed us to play games like Asteroids in our own homes all helped to put space travel into our minds. We didn't have the means to get into space physically but with electro music and a little imagination there was no final frontier. With the advances in technology and affordability of drum machines and keyboards electro music was being made at street level and a new kind of music was being formed right before our very ears. It was a fairly underground music that wasn't too easy to get access to, especially over here in the UK. I remember feeling this new style of music - I had only heard a handful of tracks then - before I even knew what it was called. Then Morgan Khan of Streetwave Records released the Electro compilations. This was a stroke of genius that brought underground electro and early hip hop to the UK high street and helped in the creation of the UK's hip hop scene which is still going strong today. The records you find listed here are many of the classic tunes from those Electro compilations plus many other lesser-known gems. With the huge advances in technology some of these records can sound dated and would mainly appeal to people who were into the electro sound back in the eighties. However, lots of these tunes still sound great today. Due to the experimental nature of these records and the fact that there was no formula and no rules to making this music sometimes these records really managed to catch-a-vibe and often sounded way ahead of their time. So whether you are an ageing B-Boy like myself who could not afford all those US import 12s while you were still at school or you are looking back at this music as someone who is into today's hip hop or electronic music. Or even if you are just interested in good dance music and have the nous to explore across all genres I think you will find records on this page of interest.
