Old School HipHop 12s 1979-1982
We have here a selection of the original hip hop from its beginnings on vinyl from 1979 through to 1982. These were rap's first and funkiest years. The early recordings pre-date sampling with the music provided by a band, usually replaying the groove from a soul or disco tune that was a party favourite at the time. The odd exceptions to this formula is a live‚ style tune with a rap over a DJ cutting breaks.
In this era there were the early records of legends like Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash as well as many great records from artists who just managed to release one or two records in their short careers. The raps can sound a little basic compared with what we hear from some of the more intelligent rappers today but the vibes were good, with rocking the party being the main objective. Many of these records have instrumental versions which are great funk and disco tunes in their own right.
